I will be constantly updating this for those who may be curious about what I’m reading right now, because I often read multiple books at a time, and they may not always be fantasy. So you might see some books that you’ve never come into contact before.
The Matarese Circle, Robert Ludlum.
I first read this book when I was around 13 or 14. So I’m just re-reading it. Not a fantasy… if it’s not obvious from the cover. Very good espionage novel, however.
Fire Study, Maria V. Snyder
The third book in the Study trilogy written by Maria V. Snyder. The first two books were very entertaining reads and I like the main character Yelena a lot, though some may find her development from dungeon prisoner to kick-ass heroine trite but I personally don’t mind. It’s a great book with a kick-ass girl! What more could you ask for? This will probably be the book I write a review on next.
Santa Olivia, Jacqueline Carey
This is an interesting book, really moresci-fi than fantasy. My first encounter with this author was with the Terre d’Ange books but the tone in this book is very different. It’s quite an interesting read and there is romance in it, although… not exactly what um… cup of tea, if you will.
The Trouble with Kings, Sherwood Smith
Sherwood Smith is a great writer. This is a fairly enjoyable book and the development of the love
story is kind of unexpected. Princess Flian evolves from a more passive character until something drove her to finally take action and the story gets even more interesting from that point on.
Graceling, Kristin Cashore
I’m about halfway through the book and so far it has been very enjoyable. I really like the idea of supernatural abilities being called Grace in this world. The female protagonist, Katasa, is basically her uncle’s henchman and assassin. Her love story with a fellow graceling, Po is perhaps rather obvious and at times even contrived (particularly their union in the woods) but their relationship is sweet and the story so far is quite engaging.
Warbreaker, Brandon Sanderson
This is the latest stand-alone book by Sanderson. I just started reading it from his website (he’s offering it for free of charge; you can find the link to his site on the home page) earlier this week. Once again Sanderson has invented a world colorful (literall) world with very a very theology and magical system. Again, just as in Elantris and the Mistborn trilog, those looking for political intrigue will nto be disappointed. I’m about 2/5 through, and I wish there were more scenes with Siri, although both of the main female characters–Siri and Vivenna–are quite likable. The story is also split between two other characters: Lightsong and Vasher, with the former showing up more. I’m looking forward to see how the romance(s?) plays out and finding out more about the secrets.
